How Poetics Works

How curation and operations become a single discipline. The method behind every Poetics screening.

In our last post, we talked about why Poetics exists, and our belief that immersive cinema deserves real audiences, not just festival circuits. But that takes a method. So here’s how we actually do this.

Two things that don’t usually go together

Most people in immersive content are either curators or operators. The creative side, comprised by those who watch hundreds of works, understand what moves an audience, care about pacing and emotional arc. Or the logistics side, that is people who manage hardware, floorplans, ticketing, and troubleshooting.

At Poetics, these aren’t two departments. They’re both part of the same process.

We personally watch and evaluate every title before it enters our catalogue. A film that wins a jury prize might overwhelm a first-timer. A quieter piece might be the one that makes someone fall in love with the medium.

That curatorial instinct then shapes every operational decision. Which films go in which order. How long a session lasts. How we brief someone before they put on the headset. What the operator says when they take it off.

The setup

Every Poetics screening follows the same principles, adapted to the space. Self-contained stations (swivel chair, headset, noise-cancelling headphones) laid out in a room plan designed for that specific venue. A single operator monitors everything from a tablet: headset status, session timing, audience flow.

We handle content licensing, equipment, staffing, hygiene protocols, and audience care. The venue provides a room and power.

No permanent fixtures. No technical training required from the partner. We arrive, build, operate, and leave the space as we found it.

Why the integration matters

Here’s what breaks when you separate curation from operations: you either get beautifully selected content that nobody can comfortably experience, or a smooth technical setup screening whatever’s available.

We’ve seen both.

The magic happens when someone sits down, puts on a headset, and within seconds is inside a story that was chosen for them, presented in conditions designed to let them forget they’re wearing technology at all. That only happens when the person choosing the film and the person designing the experience are thinking as one.

That’s how Poetics works. Curation and operations as a single discipline.
